Singapore Changi Airport, also called just Changi Airpor, is a major aviation hub in Asia, particularly in the Southeast Asian region, and is the main airport in Singapore. It is located 17 kilometers north-east from the commercial centre. The airport is the home base of Singapore Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo, SilkAir, Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia Airways, Valuair, and Jett8 Airlines Cargo. It is a hub for Garuda Indonesia and a secondary hub for Qantas, which uses Singapore as the main stopover point for flights on the Kangaroo Route between Australia and Europe, the latter being the largest foreign airline to operate from the airport with over two million passengers handled annually. In 2007, the airport handled a record 36,701,556 passengers, a 4.8% increase over the 2006 fiscal year. This made it the 19th busiest airport in the world and the fifth busiest in Asia by passenger traffic in 2007. Having accumulated over 250 awards, Singapore Changi Airport is recognised as one of the best airports in the world. With 80 airlines serving more than 180 cities in over 50 countries, Changi Airport has established itself as a major aviation hub in the Asia Pacific region. Changi Airport now has an annual handling capacity of more than 70 million passengers. Serving over 80 international airlines flying to more than 190 cities in 60 countries, Changi Airport handles more than 4,500 arrivals and departures weekly and over 37 million passengers a year. That is more than 7 times the size of Singapore’s population. With over 40,000 square meters of commercial space, Changi Airport is also Singapore’s largest shopping location.
